I just called Theresa, Mom's hospice nurse, who just saw Mom this afternoon. Theresa says Mom's throat actually looks a lot better than last time when they began the Nystatin treatment.
But, the frustrating part is that Mom has very little if any ability to swallow. The mechanics of swallowing is just not working for her. They have called for Mom's doctor to come and check her throat this evening.
Theresa and Joan, the other hospice nurse, spent an hour with Mom and in that time period Mom kept asking to try again and again to eat a little ice cream. Joan said Mom is so frustrated. Most of the ice cream did not stay in her mouth. They said she was able to swallow about 1 teaspoon at the most, total. The nursing home staff do not have lots of extra time to help Mom eat little tiny portions of ice cream or take sips. Kathy is so kind and goes in the evenings to help Mom try to get a little bit of food and drink. It's not the nicest way to have a social visit, but when Mom's friends come by, they are also helping her take little sips. May the Lord bless each one.
Joan, one of the hospice nurses, told me that Mom said she really appreciates all her friends coming by to pray with her. I have left a hymnal on Mom's table for people to use, and Mom's Bible is there too. There is also a wonderful devotional book called "Heaven" with daily readings that are really good. So, even more important than physical food and drink, is to be comforted by prayer and hearing God's Word.
Thank you again.
love from Jane
